In the 14th century, Verrier du Dubosc signed the first recorded deeds for this estate, including a few vines. George Smith, a Scottish wine merchant, acquired the property in the mid-18th century and named it after himself. Fleurs-de-lis symbolizing the Verrier du Bosq family, who founded the vineyard. A crescent is emblematic of the Port of Bordeaux: the “Port of the Moon”. Florence and Daniel Cathiard fell in love with Château Smith Haut Lafitte in 1990 and acquired it with the firm intention of perpetuating the wine’s tradition of excellence.
Mathilde Thomas-Cathiard and her husband, Bertrand Thomas, founded the Caudalie company to make a range of exclusive beauty care products from grape seeds and vine cuttings that are sold all over the world.
Blend: 60% Cab Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cab Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Very dark red in color, almost black, from the first nose a basket of fresh fruits, raspberry, cherry, strawberry.
Allowed to breathe, greater complexity: spices, dried herbs, fennel, light floral note, violet.
The palate is frank and balanced, with good concentration and very nice volume. Large quantity of tannins, the structure remains supple and creamy. A nice balance between substance, density, and freshness. The texture is delicate and precise.
The finish is very long and complex around more earthy notes of smoke and flint.
