The name of Clos du Marquis, created in 1902, was inspired by the Petit Clos adjacent to the Château de Léoville, the residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. The Clos du Marquis is produced from top terroirs of the Saint-Julien Appellation that were not part of the old Domaine de Léoville cadastre.
These terroirs are located slightly to the west and are surrounded by prestigious Classified Growths, particularly Seconds Crus Classés of Saint-Julien and Pauillac: Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton, Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande...
Exceptional Success. Since the 2007 vintage, Le Clos du Marquis is no longer officially the second wine of Léoville Las Cases, but a cru in its own right.
Blend: 70% Cab Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Cab Franc, 2% Petit Verdot
Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2009 Clos du Marquis gives up notes of warm cassis, mocha, plum preserves and tobacco with a touch of Mediterranean herbs.
The palate is solidly structured with firm, chewy tannins backing up the muscular fruit core, culminating in a mineral-laced finish.
