Outspoken and pioneering, Angelo Gaja has done much to change the landscape of the wines of Barbaresco. He took over the reins of the family estate from his father Giovanni in 1970 and started his process of modernization almost immediately. By the time of the 1978 vintage, he replaced the traditional large bottle in favor of French barriques, a step that caused many heads to turn at the time.
Today, the business is very much a family affair with his wife and children all playing a vital role in either winemaking, management or marketing of the estate’s wines. Mostly a red wine producer, Gaja also releases a white blend of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc from estate-grown fruit under the Langhe classification called Rossj-Bass.
Gaia & Rey Deriving from Gaja's almost nine-acre Treiso vineyard planted in 1979, this wine is named for Angelo Gaja's oldest daughter, Gaia Gaja, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Gaia & Rey ferments with naturally occurring yeasts and aged for 6-8 months in oak barrels.
This is an intensely age-worthy wine, developing tertiary notes of nuts, butter and caramel with age.
Straw yellow color. The aromas cascade onto the palate with depth and richness, plus an inviting sweet note of honey.
Bright acidity provides energy and graces the wine with a pleasant balance and immediate drinkability. The fruity notes of white peach follow all the way through a very long finish.
