The history of the Frescobaldi family begins around the year 1000, during the same time period as the birth of the banking industry of Medieval Florence. The Frescobaldi quickly became the absolute protagonists of political and economic life earning them the right to the title ‘treasurers to the English Crown’.
An ancient fortress defending Florence until the year AD 1000, the Castle of Nipozzano is the most famous and historic property of the Frescobaldi family. Popular tradition has it that the word Nipozzano means “without a well”, supporting the fact that the area lacks water, a circumstance ideal for growing vines. The castle and the vine growing estate are located to the east of Florence in the heart of the prestigious Chianti Rufina territory, precisely on the mountainous side that overlooks the valley of the Arno River.
